8 Dec 2009  ::  Break Point
Biking in the rain for months on end, I can deal with it. It certainly gets old. The prep work before every ride, the constantly wet everything and the awkwardness of walking into a grocery store looking like you're wearing hefty bags.

This week has given me some new challenges. Weather has become very cold. Today it warmed up twenty odd degrees and hit thirty. I commuted to work in 11 degree temperature and the night before I biked to and from my indoor soccer game in similar conditions. Tomorrow will be the same.

Folks, at that temperature range, gloves last five minutes, no matter how hard to pedal, before fingers start getting numb. If ears are even remotely exposed, they are soon aching from the cold.

I lost my biking gloves recently. I can't find a winter hat. Today I biked in with motorcycle gloves and a scarf tied around my head and neck. When I arrived at work, the scarf was frosty from my breath. The sweat on my body cooled by the time I got upstairs from the bike rack.

If I lived in a place with this sort of weather for months straight, I don't know if I could cope. I get home, sorta cold, and can't imagine going out again. Bye bye run.
