14 Aug 2009 :: Craigslist, I <3 U
I'm a bit of a craigslist junkie, especially concerning bicycles. As confessed at an earlier juncture, I probably check both Eugene and Portland's craigslist about three times a day. Almost every bicycle I own I've purchased on craigslist. Mad stats time.
- Surly Karate Monkey- I bought this on the heels of an old GT I had bought for 60 that I developed a strong dislike for because it was too small and the front fork was terrible. I moved all the parts to the KM, which was bought for 160, bought a wheelset for around 100 of craigslist, and had a solid bike for 340 dollars.
- Sold: Schwinn Madison- Always a bit too large and with Christmas coming up, I parted the bike out and sold it for around 300. When I got my taxes back this year, I bought a Soma Rush- about five lbs lighter, better components, for 450, but sold the crankset off the Soma for 150, leaving me close to the cost of the used Madison, but ended up with a major upgrade
- Incremental- Over the last two years, I've added components and parts to bikes whenever I saw something really cheap, picking up a new front wheel for Joe, two Avid BB5s, one Avid BB7 and the Rockhopper for around 150 total dollars.
- Sold: Karate Monkey- I recently sold the KM frame for 220 dollars, was sixty more than I paid for it, and I put major scratches and couple dents onto it. I turned that into a brand new frame and fork, which will get all of the parts I've accumulated, as well as the remaining bits from the original GT.
That being said, I think I got my best deal last night. Some guy posted an FSA Gossamer crankset, 105 front and rear derailers and a near brand new chain for twenty dollars, though he should have aimed for something like 150. Anyway, I moved the Rockhopper back to "fully" geared by piecing together cogs to make a full cassette. The crank will be picked up by Joe (who needs a new one) or will be taken up to Portland and sold on craigslist for 50 or sixty dollars.
