8 Jul 2009  ::  Hinting at Douchebaggery
Being incredibly internet savvy, I registered for Pandora about three weeks ago and quickly tagged Radiohead, Cake, Pink Floyd, The Shins and Smashing Pumpkins. The station (umarth) quickly started banging out the mentioned artists, as well as the Pixies, The Killers, The Strokes and The White Stripes, all of which I have enjoyed immensely.

A couple surprises in the mix; Postal Service's Nothing Better has been really great. Kinda hit me at a good time, though I'm taking a bit of an offense at some of the lyrical content. At one point the lyrics are as follows: "I will block the door like a goalie tending the net/In the third quarter of a tied-game rivalry." This is inept from a sporting context. Soccer is played in halves (halfs?), Lacrosse has quarters, making the lyrics seem less than urgent and hockey has three periods, meeting the urgency, but quarters mean four segments, not three. So Postal Service is a handful of nerds who wouldn't know Steve Nash from Dwight Howard.

My favorite "new" band has been Interpol. Their sound is amazing and has really pulled me in, as I really like the singer's voice. However, as I've grown to like them, I've looked up their song lyrics, which are really kinda retarded. Now I hear a song and part of me likes them, while the other part cringes, because I'm pretty sure these guys are douchebags. Maybe I don't like competition.

Actually that "third quarter" bit rubbed me the wrong way too, because for some unknown reason I too knew that hockey was played in three periods.

Interpol, the band that every other band sounds like.

Wait, what is wrong with lacrosse? Not urgent enough? Whatever. They're just a bunch of dumb lyrics. Sure, if they were really stellar prose, that might put Postal Service in the the realm of great bands (can you call them a band?), but for the most part, I am just fine with listening to music that simply ranks as "good."
