16 Apr 2009  ::  Three Things Only
I think the worst thing about being even relatively self aware is how all the failures, shortcomings and whatnot build up over the years. A lot of the time, I'll sit and reflect and wonder if I am a grumpy 80 year old man already. I hope not, but the case against this is far from compelling- I can only really focus on one thing at one time, I need to sleep a lot and I often have great difficulty managing a sequence longer than three steps.

This disability was discovered last Spring when I bought a new pair of pants with that extra button on the inside- like dress pants. I'd use the bathroom, do the two buttons, belt up and wash my hands and walk into the bright, shining world with my zipper all the way down. Unfortunately, this wasn't a rare circumstance, but every time I button up the pants- whether to put them on, after a visit to the bathroom or what have you, but I never manage to remember to zip up, so I'm pretty sure everyone I know is aware that I prefer black and gray boxer-briefs.

At this rate, I'll be sweat pants only by 35.

My mental stack is about three things, which is why certain hygiene routines are very strict. It's taken me a couple months to be able to remember to brush my teeth before I leave the apartment but not until after I've eaten, instead of right out of the shower. The same goes for deodorant: if it's not put on right away, it won't get put on at all. And, if I don't slowly accumulate a list of things to do or buy, the list will only be the three things I remember.
